Divorce Cost and Timeline in Dubai
Two questions come before all the others, and neither has a published answer. How much does a divorce cost in Dubai, and how long will it take.
In short
People ask because they need to plan. They have a lease to decide about, a job that may move, children in a school year, and savings they were not expecting to spend on lawyers. A vague answer is not much use to them.
So this guide does the closest thing to a figure. It sets out exactly what the cost is made up of, what pushes it up and what brings it down, what the stages are and which of them have no fixed length, and how to get a real estimate for your own case rather than an average of other people’s.
The short answer
There is no fixed price for a divorce in Dubai and no fixed timetable.
The cost is made up of four separate things: the court’s own fees, your lawyer’s fees, translation and attestation of foreign documents, and expert fees where the court appoints an expert. Those are charged by different people and they behave differently.
The time is driven almost entirely by one question: whether you and your spouse agree the terms. An agreed divorce takes the short route. A contested one involving children, financial claims and a spouse who has left the country runs through more stages, and several of those stages have no fixed length at all.
Anyone who quotes you a price or a date before reading your papers is guessing. That applies to us as much as to anyone else.
What you are actually paying for
Ask any firm to break a quote into these parts. If it will not, you cannot tell what you are being charged for.
The court’s fees
The court charges to register a case. Where a financial claim sits alongside the divorce, the basis of that charge can differ from a claim with no money attached. These fees are set by the courts, not by any law firm, and they are paid to the court.
Your lawyer’s fees
This is the part a firm controls, and it follows the work rather than the outcome. An agreed separation where the terms are already settled is a different job from a contested case with property, maintenance and a custody dispute. Translation and attestation
Proceedings in the local courts are conducted in Arabic. A marriage certificate issued abroad, foreign birth certificates, salary evidence and any agreement between you will normally need legal translation, and foreign certificates usually need attestation first. This is a real cost, it is charged per document, and it scales with how much paper your case involves.
Expert fees
Where the finances are disputed, or where the arrangements for a child need looking into, the court can appoint an expert to investigate and report. That carries a cost, and the court decides who deposits it.
The power of attorney
Appointing a lawyer to act for you in court generally requires a notarised power of attorney, which carries its own government fee. It is small compared with everything else, and it is separate.
Enforcement, if the judgment is ignored
Winning is not the same as being paid. If maintenance stops or an order about the children is not followed, the execution stage is a further piece of work with its own fees. Unpaid maintenance is the usual reason this happens, so it is worth knowing about at the start rather than being surprised by it later.
What pushes the cost up
Contested rather than agreed
This is the single biggest factor, and nothing else comes close. Two people who agree the terms and record them spend a fraction of what two people who fight every point spend. Agreement does not have to be total to help. Settling the children and arguing only about money is cheaper than arguing about both.
Children
A dispute about care, contact or guardianship adds hearings, evidence and often an expert. It also tends to be the part of a case people are least willing to compromise on, which is understandable and expensive.
Money and property
Financial claims are dealt with inside the divorce proceedings. Where disclosure has to be forced, where assets sit in more than one country, or where a company or a property has to be valued, the work grows. Say at the first meeting where everything is, including anything held abroad.
A spouse outside the UAE
One spouse often leaves as soon as the marriage breaks down. The case can still proceed, but the papers have to be formally served on them and that service has to be proved to the court. It follows a set procedure, it depends on where they are and whether an address is known, and it is the most common single cause of delay.
A party who will not engage
Non attendance does not stop a case. It does mean every step has to be documented carefully, which costs time.
Asking the court to apply a foreign law
In some circumstances a party can ask for the law of their home country to be applied. It is not automatic, the content of that law has to be proved in a form the court accepts, and doing that properly is extra work. Expatriate divorce in Dubai deals with this question on its own.

- Documents gathered, attested and translated early rather than in batches.
- No dispute about the children.
- No expert appointment needed.
- A clear instruction to your lawyer, so work is not repeated.
- Deciding early which claims actually matter to you, and dropping the ones that do not.
How long does a divorce take in Dubai
The honest answer is that it depends on the same thing the cost depends on. Rather than an average that would mislead you, here is the sequence and what decides the length of each part. The procedure itself is set out in more detail on our divorce lawyers in Dubai page.
- Advice and documents. As long as it takes you to gather what is needed. This is the stage you control.
- Family guidance and conciliation. A divorce normally goes here before it reaches a judge. If terms are agreed, the matter can end at this stage. If not, a referral is issued and the case moves on.
- Filing at the personal status court. Short, once the referral is in hand and the papers are ready.
- Service on the other spouse. Quick if they are here and cooperating. Open ended if they are abroad or cannot be located.
- Written submissions and hearings. Runs to the court’s schedule, with time between hearings for each side to file.
- An expert report, where one is ordered. Adds a period that depends on the expert’s workload and on how quickly both sides hand over what is asked for.
- Judgment. Issued when the court has what it needs.
- Appeal, if either side appeals. A further period with its own deadline.
- Enforcement, if the judgment is not complied with. A separate process with its own timetable.
The stages that have no fixed length
Service on a spouse outside the UAE, an expert appointment, and enforcement against someone who will not pay. Any of these can take longer than everything before it. They are also the three that a lawyer cannot simply push through, which is why a confident timeline given in advance is not worth much.
Why an average would mislead you
An agreed divorce between two people who are both here, with documents ready and nothing disputed, and a contested case with a custody fight and an absent spouse are not the same case. How to get a real estimate for your own divorce
A firm can quote properly once it knows five things. Have these ready and you will get a useful answer in the first conversation rather than the third.
Then ask for the answer in writing: which fee structure applies, what it includes, what is excluded, what court and government fees to expect on top, and what happens to the fee if the matter settles at the conciliation stage or goes to appeal.
- Where you both are. Resident in the UAE, or one of you abroad, and whether they are responding.
- Whether the terms are agreed. Fully, partly, or not at all, and which points are in dispute.
- Children. How many, their ages, and whether care and contact are agreed.
- What is financially in play. Property, accounts, a business, anything held outside the UAE, and any maintenance being claimed.
- What already exists on paper. Marriage certificate and where it was issued, any agreement between you, and anything already filed by either side or received from a court or the police.

There is no single figure, because the cost follows the work. It is built from court fees, your lawyer’s fee, translation and attestation, and expert fees where an expert is appointed. What decides the total is how much of the case is contested.
How long does a divorce take in Dubai?
It depends on whether the terms are agreed, whether both spouses are in the country and responding, and whether an expert is appointed. Several stages have no fixed length, so treat any confident timeline given before your papers are read with caution.
Is an uncontested divorce cheaper?
Considerably. Agreeing the terms, especially at the conciliation stage, avoids most of what makes a divorce expensive. Partial agreement still helps.
Do I pay court fees as well as my lawyer’s fee?
Yes. Court fees, translation, attestation, expert fees and enforcement costs are separate from what a firm charges for its own time, and you should see them itemised.
Can I recover my legal costs from my spouse?
A court may order a losing party to contribute towards costs. Do not assume the contribution covers your full fee, and do not make the decision to litigate on that basis.
Does it cost more if my spouse has left the UAE?
Usually, yes, and it takes longer. The extra cost is in serving the papers properly and proving that service to the court.
What if I cannot pay for the whole case at once?
Ask about staged arrangements, where the matter is split into phases with a price for each. Ask before you instruct anyone, not after.
