The short answer
A travel ban in the UAE is not one thing. It is a restriction on leaving the country that can come from a criminal file, from a civil judgment, from an enforcement action over a debt, from a labour matter or from a family case. Which of those it is decides everything about what can be done next, so identifying the source is the first piece of work, not the last.

What to do first
If you have just been turned back at the airport
Ask for anything in writing and note the exact wording you were given, the terminal, the time and the name or number of the desk. Do not argue at the counter, because the officer in front of you is not the person who can lift it. Do not try another airport or a land border on the assumption that it is a local problem. Then find out what the flag is attached to, which has to be done through the authority holding the file.
If you are still in the UAE and suspect a ban
Check before you book anything. People commonly discover a ban only because they had already paid for a flight. Where you know there is a complaint, a judgment or an unpaid liability behind it, gather the papers for that matter now, because they are what any application will rest on.
If you are outside the UAE
A restriction on leaving is not the same as a restriction on entering, and the two are often confused. If you are abroad and worried about returning, the question is whether anything has been entered against your entry, which is covered on our page about UAE immigration and residency. The different kinds of travel ban
The categories below describe what we see in practice. Which authority enters and lifts each one, and on whose order, is something to confirm for your specific case rather than assume from a web page.
A ban connected to a criminal case
Where a criminal complaint or an ongoing prosecution exists, a restriction on leaving may be entered while the file is live. This is the category that surprises people most, because a complaint can be filed without the person being told. A ban connected to a civil judgment or a debt
Where a creditor has obtained a judgment and moved to enforcement, a restriction on the debtor’s movement can be one of the measures available. Loans, credit cards, guarantees given for a company and unpaid cheques are the usual sources. An unpaid balance on its own is not the same as a measure having been entered, and it is worth establishing which of the two you are actually facing. A ban connected to a labour matter
Employment disputes can produce restrictions and reports that affect movement and status. The mechanism is not the same as a court ordered ban and it should not be described as though it were.
A ban connected to a family case
Family proceedings can involve orders restricting a child’s travel, and sometimes a parent’s, particularly where custody, guardianship or maintenance is in issue. These are court orders and they are dealt with within the family case itself.
How to find out whether a ban exists
Why there is no single answer
Different bans sit with different authorities, so there is no one list covering all of them. A check that comes back clear on one channel does not prove nothing exists on another. This is the most common reason people are caught out at the airport after they thought they had checked.
Official channels
There are official channels for checking, and which one applies depends on the type of ban and the emirate. Because these channels and their web addresses change, we do not list them here without confirming them first.
Checking through a lawyer
Where a personal check is not available or comes back inconclusive, an advocate can make enquiries against the file, which is often the only way to learn what the restriction is attached to and which authority holds it. Knowing the case number and the authority is what makes the next step possible.
How a travel ban is lifted
Travel ban removal in Dubai is not a service you buy. A ban is a symptom, and it normally comes off when the thing behind it is resolved. Where the underlying matter cannot be resolved, the ban does not come off simply because an application was made. Nobody can honestly tell you a ban will definitely be lifted before they have seen what it is attached to.
Resolving the underlying matter
A restriction attached to a criminal file generally falls away when the file is closed or concluded, or withdrawn in the categories where a withdrawal ends the case. A restriction attached to a judgment debt generally requires the debt to be paid, settled or secured. A restriction in a family case is varied within that case.
Applying to the authority or the court
In defined circumstances an application can be made to lift or suspend a restriction even where the underlying matter continues, for example on grounds relating to the person’s circumstances or to the nature of the case. Whether that route is open to you depends on the category.
How long it takes
That depends on the category, on the authority, and on whether anything is missing from the file. We would rather give you a realistic range once we have seen the file than publish a timeframe here that would be wrong for most readers.
Travel bans and settlement
Getting the settlement right
Where a debt is behind the restriction, a settlement is often the route out. The mistake people make is paying first and asking about the paperwork afterwards. What matters is that the settlement is recorded in the right place, that the creditor withdraws or the court records satisfaction, and that the step which actually lifts the restriction is taken and evidenced.
Partial payment and instalments
A part payment does not necessarily change anything unless the creditor and the court agree that it does. If you are offered an instalment arrangement, get the effect on the restriction confirmed as part of the arrangement rather than assuming it follows.
Do not pay anyone who promises removal
Payment to an intermediary who claims to be able to have a name cleared is not a route that exists. If a restriction is attached to a case, it comes off through the case.
Absconding cases
What an absconding report is
An absconding case in Dubai usually begins as a report by an employer that a worker has left employment without following the proper process. It is an administrative step, but the consequences reach into residency, the ability to move to a new employer and, in some situations, movement in and out of the country.
How they arise
Frequently from a dispute rather than from anyone actually disappearing. A worker who stops attending because they have not been paid, or who is abroad when something changes, or who is in a dispute over notice, can find that a report has been filed describing events in a way they would not recognise.
Contesting one
A report can be challenged, and it is easier to challenge early, before other steps are taken on the basis of it. What carries weight is documentary: messages, attendance records, pay records, medical evidence, correspondence showing what actually happened and when.
If it is withdrawn or cancelled
Withdrawal is not automatically the end of the practical consequences, because entries made elsewhere on the basis of the report may still need to be cleared. Check that the position has actually been updated rather than assuming it.

Your passport and Emirates ID. Anything you were given at the airport. Any case, complaint or file number. Any judgment, summons, notice or demand. For a debt matter, the loan or card agreement, the statements and any settlement correspondence. For a labour matter, the contract, the resignation or termination letter, pay records and messages with the employer. A written timeline with dates.
Questions people ask us
How do I check a travel ban in the UAE myself?
There are official channels, and which applies depends on the type of ban and the emirate. Because a clear result on one channel does not rule out an entry held elsewhere, treat a personal check as a starting point rather than a clearance, especially before booking travel.
Can a travel ban be lifted quickly?
Nobody can promise that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Some restrictions come off quickly once the matter behind them is dealt with. Others cannot be lifted while the case is open. The honest answer requires seeing the file first.
Can a ban be entered without my knowing?
Yes. A complaint or a claim can be filed without your being notified in a way that reaches you, particularly if you have changed address, changed employer or been outside the country.
Is an absconding report a criminal case?
It starts as an administrative report by an employer rather than a criminal complaint, but it can have consequences beyond the employment relationship.
I settled the debt. Why am I still stopped?
Usually because the settlement was paid but the step that clears the entry was never taken, or was taken with one authority and not another. This is common and it is fixable, but it needs the paperwork.
