The first question most people ask is what a lawyer will cost. It is a fair question, and it usually arrives before anyone is ready to talk about the case itself.

How lawyer fees in Dubai are usually charged
Four structures cover most legal work in the UAE, and a single matter can use more than one.

One agreed amount for a defined piece of work: reviewing a contract, preparing a legal notice, a power of attorney, a written opinion on a specific question. You know the figure before the work starts. The scope has to be written down, because anything outside it is a separate instruction.

You are billed for time spent, itemised on the invoice. This suits matters where nobody can predict the volume of work at the start. Ask for the rate of every person who will touch the file, and for a point at which the firm will come back to you before going further.

The matter is split into phases, each with its own price: assessment, filing, first instance hearings, appeal, enforcement. You pay as each stage begins and can stop at the end of one. It is often the clearest option for cost control in litigation.

A continuing arrangement, usually monthly or annual, for ongoing advice. Companies use it for contract review and day to day questions. Court work is normally quoted separately on top.

Some arrangements tie part of the fee to what is recovered, most often in debt recovery. They are regulated and not available for every type of matter. No lawyer can promise a result, whatever the fee structure.
What makes the cost go up or down
Two people with a similar problem can receive very different quotes. These factors explain the gap.
- Whether it goes to court. A matter settled through a legal notice and negotiation costs less than the same matter litigated.
- How many stages it runs. First instance, appeal and cassation are separate pieces of work, and so is enforcement once you have a judgment.
- The volume of documents. Years of correspondence, invoices and bank records take time to read before anyone can advise.
- Translation. Proceedings in the local courts are conducted in Arabic, so documents in other languages usually need certified legal translation, charged separately.
- Urgency. Travel bans, detention and filing deadlines compress the work into days rather than weeks.
Costs that are not the lawyer’s fee
A quote for legal fees is not the total cost of a case. Ask any firm to list these separately.
- Court and government fees. Filing a claim carries a court fee, with further fees at appeal and enforcement stage. They are set by the courts, not by the firm, and in civil matters they are normally calculated from the value of the claim.
- Legal translation, charged per document by a licensed translator.
- Expert fees, where the court appoints an expert and orders the parties to deposit them.
- Notarisation and the power of attorney. Appointing a lawyer to act for you generally requires a notarised power of attorney, which carries its own government fee.
- Enforcement costs. Winning is not the same as being paid. Execution proceedings and asset searches are further steps with their own fees.
What a first consultation covers
A first consultation is a short, private conversation, in person, by phone or online. You describe what has happened, we ask questions, and you leave with three things: whether you have a matter worth pursuing or defending, what the realistic options are, and what the next step costs.
What it is not is a full legal opinion or a strategy document. Those are paid work, because they take real time.
Bring whatever you have: contracts, the tenancy agreement, offer letter, cheques, bank statements, messages, police or case reference numbers, and any document you have been asked to sign. Why criminal and family matters are quoted differently
Cost follows the structure of the matter, and two areas show that clearly.
In criminal matters, the work often starts at the police station or the public prosecution, before any court case exists. It can end there, or run through trial and appeal, and a travel ban or detention changes what has to be done in the first days. That is why criminal lawyer fees in Dubai are rarely a single figure at the outset.
In family matters, including divorce, cost depends on whether the two sides agree. An uncontested separation where custody and finances are already settled is a different job from a contested case with property, maintenance and children in dispute.
The same applies to labour and employment claims, where an unpaid salary complaint may be resolved at MOHRE without ever reaching court.
Questions to ask before you engage
Use these on us as well. A firm that answers them plainly is telling you something about how it will run your case.
If an answer is vague, ask again in writing. The advocate or legal consultant distinction matters for question five, because it decides who can appear in court for you.
- Which fee structure applies to my matter, and why that one?
- What is included in the figure, and what is excluded?
- What court and government fees should I expect on top?
- Who does the work, and who attends the hearings?
- Is the person representing me in court a licensed advocate?
- What happens to the fee if the matter settles early, or goes to appeal?
- Will I receive a written engagement letter before any payment?
- Is VAT included?
How we quote
You describe the matter, we read the documents, and we then set out in writing what the work involves, which fee structure applies, what it costs and what is not included. You get that before you pay anything. If the scope changes, we tell you before the work is done, not after.
We will not give you a figure over the phone for a case nobody has read. A number produced that quickly is a guess.
Common questions about legal fees
How much does a lawyer in Dubai cost?
There is no single answer, because the fee follows the work. A drafting job, an employment claim and a contested commercial case sit at very different points. Send us the facts and we will quote for your matter.
Are UAE lawyer fees set by law?
The profession is regulated under Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2022 and its 2025 executive regulations, and your fee is agreed with the firm in a written engagement.
Do I pay court fees as well as your fee?
Yes. Court fees, translation, expert fees and enforcement costs are separate from what a firm charges for its own work, and you should see them itemised.
Can the other side be ordered to pay my legal fees?
A court may order a losing party to contribute towards costs. Do not assume the contribution covers your full fee, or decide whether to bring a claim on that basis.
